Mason of the Year.
Every year, a Brother from Jupiter Light Lodge is bestowed the title, Mason of the year. This honor is earned by one who has excelled in donating time and guidance above and beyond all others.
It is with great honor that I get to publish the brother who has outshined all others with regard to his unwavering support to the craft and selfless donation of time, Mr. John “Jack” Hammill.
Born in Massachusetts in the early 1800’s Jack was a person bound for greatness even then. At a young age, Jack used to have to walk to and from school uphill both ways, even on snowy August mornings. Starting in middle school, Jack fell in love with, and excelled in basketball as the town’s star forward. There were even rumors of him being groomed for the Boston Celtics.
In his teens he was known to be a rambunctious lad, yet honest. When confronted and asked if he cut down his neighbor’s cherry tree he replied, “I can not tell a lie, my brother did it.” At that point his future was cast in stone, he was going into politics. The first natural stop was entering into local politics in Scituate. After many years of serving the good people of the Bay State, he did what every man does when he leaves political office, he entered the family business. He went from burying the truth, to burying people.
He was a man known by his motto, “do it once and do it right.” He took that conviction with him when he entered the family business, and was proud of the fact that he never had to bury the same person twice.
In later years he did what most colorful people do, he retired to Florida.
“And now you know… the rest of the story.”
